No Clothes Dryers

No Clothes Dryers

Many Japanese washing machines (including mine) have a dryer setting, but it does not work well and no one actually wastes electricity trying to use it. Virtually every home and apartment in Japan will have a balcony and clothes rack for the purposes of hanging clothes out to dry. This isn't so bad except for the fact that it can take a considerable time for a pair of wet blue jeans to dry out in the freezing winter cold. In more modern homes the room that contains the shower may have heated air ducts on the ceiling and clothes are sometimes hung in this room with the hot air switched on in order to speed up the drying process.
